Early Signs of Glaucoma

Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that affects the optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness, which is why early detection is important. At Vision Care & Surgery Associates, serving Hialeah and Weston, our ophthalmology team provides comprehensive eye care, including glaucoma treatment, for patients of all ages. Here is a look at some of the early signs of glaucoma.

Symptoms of glaucoma

It is easy for glaucoma to go undetected until the disease has progressed because many people with the disease do not experience pain or other early warning signs. However, you need to have your eyes checked for the possibility of glaucoma if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Halos around lights. Do you notice bright circles around lights or do you experience blurriness, such as when you have smudged glasses? This may not be a natural part of aging but the progression of glaucoma, which requires treatment.
  • Loss of peripheral vision. The loss of peripheral vision is usually the first aspect of vision to be affected by glaucoma. However, impairment of the peripheral vision due to glaucoma often occurs gradually, but this vision damage cannot be reversed.
  • Eye pressure or pain. If you have a sudden headache or sharp pain in your eyes, this may be a sign of glaucoma. Eye pressure may not be a sign of glaucoma, but it is a risk factor. Elevated eye pressure that leads to glaucoma and goes untreated can damage the optic nerve and cause vision impairment and even blindness.
  • Red eyes. Many people experience red eyes temporarily, but if it is a persistent symptom or if it occurs along with eye pain or nausea, it may be a sign of glaucoma.
