Diabetic Retinopathy

Vision Care & Surgery Associates Provide Care for Diabetic Retinopathy

If you have diabetes, you are at particular risk for vision problems. The high blood sugar levels associated with unmanaged diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes and a condition called “diabetic retinopathy.” At Vision Care & Surgery Associates in Hialeah and Weston, we provide comprehensive monitoring and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetes is a metabolic condition that affects the production of insulin in the body. Either no insulin is produced or insufficient insulin is available to remove glucose from the body. The accumulation of glucose causes damage to blood vessels throughout the body, and the eyes, which have very delicate blood vessels, are particularly vulnerable. The damage can lead to gradual or sudden loss of vision. Your physician will recommend you see your eye doctor more frequently to monitor your eyes for signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Diagnosing Diabetic Retinopathy

Your eye doctor will do a comprehensive examination, which will entail dilation of the pupils, allowing a view of the internal structures of the eyes. The doctor will carefully examine the blood vessels of the eyes for small signs of damage, such as abnormal blood vessels, swelling structures, fatty deposits, new growth of vessels, scarring from leakage, problems in the optic nerve, or retinal detachment. If any signs of diabetic retinopathy are found, the doctor will discuss options for treatment with you.

Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy

You may not require treatment in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, but close monitoring for potential problems is recommended. Medications are available that can be injected into the eyes to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. Photocoagulation is a laser surgery technique used to stop the leakage of blood and fluid from damaged blood vessels.
